Ask any woman you come across and chances are 9 out of 10 will tell you that they find men that keep beards more attractive than their clean-shaven counterparts. While it appears that the world has moved on from the ‘fill peak beards’ that was common in the 20th and early part of the 21st century, facial hair is still able to do the Magic and draw women according to science.
The Internet is filled with news and positives about keeping a beards and very few men have gotten sticks for keeping beards as the facial fuzz has somewhat entrenched itself deep into our consciousness, becoming the rule rather than the edgy exception.
Before the Internet buries the beards for good, Australian researchers have found what they say is an evolutionary link between beards and sexual attractiveness.
According to a recent study conducted at the University of Queensland in Australia which polled 8520 straight women on how attracted they were to men, men with beards were found to be top of the list. The study sorted men into four categories: clean shaven, light stubble of not more than five days’ growth, heavy stubble of 10 days growth, and thick beard grown for more than a month. The result of the study however points to the importance of beards and tells men why they shouldn’t have a clean-shaven baby face if they want women eating out of their palms.
Majority of the women in the study were drawn and attracted to men with heavy stubble, and those that loved light stubble for a one-night stand. Men with full-on beards were at the top of the scale of preferences of women when they were asked who they’d like to be in a long-term relationship with. The conclusion of the study is that men who had a great big bushy beard will most probably be seen as marriage materials by admiring women than men without beards.
The study however says that having a beard doesn’t mean a man would be able to commit to a relationship. It only serves as an indication of the man’s ability to compete for resources. The Co-author of the study, Barnaby Dixson in an interview with the New York Times said that a face full of whiskers is subconsciously associated with qualities such as masculinity, age, confidence, and generosity, which are all ideas that are well grounded in evolution.
The study however also says that asides women, there are also another group of people that love men with facial hair more than women that participated in the University of Queensland study, gay men. A different survey conducted in Brazil and the Czech Republic involving almost 1,600 participants found that “homosexual men preferred hairier stimuli than heterosexual women.”
